When your car air conditioner goes on the fritz, it turns your day upside down. Your commute, your errands, and especially if you have kids or pets; everything is affected when your car air conditioner goes out.
If your vents no longer blow cold air, there are a few different things which could be wrong which you or your mechanic can investigate.
4 Reasons Your Car Air Conditioner Isn’t Working Properly
The most common reason your car air conditioner won’t work right is because it needs to be recharged. Freon is the refrigerant your vehicle uses to dispel heat, and it can leak out slowly, or you may have a larger leak in the A/C system.
You can add more freon yourself, but if you aren’t comfortable doing so, a mechanic can take care of it for you and get your car air conditioner back in shape quickly.
Be careful if you choose to recharge it yourself, as air conditioning systems are very sensitive. Freon is measured in pounds, and a charging machine is necessary to measure how much freon is currently in your system. If you don’t have access to this tool or knowledge, you would be better served having a mechanic handle it.
If you refill it yourself and find your car air conditioner isn’t working again after a few weeks, that’s indicative of a leak and you’ll need to have hoses, seals and the whole system checked over.
2. Compressor Won’t Engage
A couple of things can cause your car air conditioner compressor to not work anymore. There could be an electrical fault in the A/C compressor, or the freon may be low or the car may be overheating.
Since cars have computers, they automatically turn off systems when they sense engine problems to protect themselves. Your car air conditioner is one of the first to be shut off if there is a problem.
A visit to the mechanic is in order to determine the exact cause and repair this problem.
3. Blend Air Door Is Stuck
When you turn the air from heat to A/C, there is a little door inside your ventilation system which moves to allow the different type of air in. This is called the blend air door. If it doesn’t change, it’s going to continue to blow hot air from the engine even when you ask for air conditioning. Definitely bring your car air conditioner in to a mechanic to get at the blend air door.
4. Fan Has Stopped Working
If your car air conditioner fan no longer runs, it could be just a wire or it could be the whole fan is shot. This is a solution which may require taking apart your whole dashboard, so you want to make sure you know what’s really happening before doing anything drastic or on your own.
